Storm-damaged fence? Here's where to start.

Safety comes first

Keep people and pets away from unstable sections and sharp debris. If you see a downed power line or a fence touching electrical equipment, stay clear and contact the utility or emergency services. Don't try to move it yourself. Once the area is safe, you can assess the fence without rushing into cleanup.

Document the whole fence line

Take wide photos before moving debris, then photograph the damaged panels, posts, gate, and any nearby structures. If you plan to ask an insurer about coverage, those photos may help you explain what happened; confirm requirements directly with your insurer. A wide view also helps Chris see whether the damage is isolated or spread out.

Look for the less obvious damage

A panel can be put back only if the supports are sound. Look for leaning or loose posts, split rails, broken gate hardware, and sections pulled out of alignment. You don't have to diagnose the fix, but showing these areas makes the first conversation more useful.

Ask about the whole job
